About the ancestors
What ancestors mean to Suzanne
Charlemagne and how everyone alive today is linked together. It’s like Six Degrees of Separation. But bigger. We’re talking about Charlemagne and the peoples of Europe, because it’s an example that we’re familiar with, and not because we’re folkish. The theory of interrelation applies all across the planet. https://www.theguardian.com/science/commentisfree/2015/may/24/business-genetic-ancestry-charlemagne-adam-rutherford
it’s also been explored elsewhere: http://icelandreview.com/stuff/views/2007/02/08/iceland-family-tree
The Theory behind it all http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2013/05/07/charlemagnes-dna-and-our-universal-royalty/
Suzanne talks through liberal universalist heathenism, as it relates to ancestors.
Kate talks through ancestors and universalist principles
Vikings in the sagas: how did they look at their ancestors? Take a look at Hilda Ellis ‘Road to Hel’ There’s a PDF available online for free here, or you can see if your local library has a copy. http://www.germanicmythology.com/scholarship/road_to_hel.pdf

It’s storytime again! This is a re-interpretation of the Flyting, and it seemed appropriate to use quick one liners and shade for an admittedly one-sided contest of insults between the gods. As this article explains shade is “the bitter residue of a people who have mastered the art of dismissing and humiliating others with humor and sarcasm after having been degraded for years ourselves.” https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/17/magazine/the-underground-art-of-the-insult.html
Applied to a single person, this seemed to us to fit the Silver Tongued One’s situation and attitude perfectly.
We’ve put some classic quick quip one-liners in here too, as throwing shade can be non-verbal and that doesn’t translate particularly well to a podcast *side eye* * hair flick* *sips tea*
You might notice that there are some incidents referenced in Loki’s Flyting that we now don’t have the corresponding stories for. Some folks will say that this is because we’ve lost the original stories, and that they were well known at the time, and others say that Loki made the incidents up on the spot for his own purpose of shaming the gods. Either way, we’re probably not going to find out...
Disclaimer: Kate and I aren’t particularly good at throwing shade in person, or throwing anything for that matter, but we hope you enjoy the episode anyway :)

There are two main versions of the Nine Noble Virtues that you can go explore, an article here should start you off: http://www.goheathen.org/wordpress/?p=24
Limitations for the Nine Noble Virtues are summed up nicely in a two part article, available here: https://kvasiramongstthegods.wordpress.com/2013/07/08/heathen-ethics-part-1-nine-nearly-useless-virtues/ and here’s part II: https://kvasiramongstthegods.wordpress.com/2013/07/16/heathen-ethics-part-3-omg-411-4-afas-nnv-omg-wtf-bbq-lol/
Point of note for the AFA nine virtues: the last one on their list is one which doesn’t follow the pattern of a virtue and it’s opposite: Ancestry is better than Universalism. For us, this is not a zero sum, it’s not ‘choose one or the other, but not both.’ We can be universalist and still want to respect our family. Universalism is based more in the principle that anyone can practice heathenry, rather than who my ancestors were. We suspect that here, in light of other related statements the AFA has made, this can be taken as supporting an exclusive interpretation of heathenry.

AFA statement on race and heathenry led to many organisations signing up to Declaration 127, based on a verse from the Havamal.
You can also sign Declaration 127 as an individual, or as a Kindred, Hearth, organisation or group, and read more about it here: http://www.declaration127.com/

We’ve been doing Frithcast for a year now. A whole year. You’ve let us prattle on for a full 12 months. And you, lovely listeners, are the reason that we have. So, we’d like to say thank you, in the only way that we can: to celebrate our first birthday, we’d like to present you with a very special episode. No learning to do or references to explore this time: instead, we proudly present clips of some of the mad random things that we’ve talked about whilst recording that didn’t quite make it to the episodes.
Thank you from us to you, we hope you enjoy, and carry on listening :)
Suzanne and Kate
PS: Dear Mr Shakespeare, we’re sorry. Totally love your stuff.
